Product Description

A marvelous romance is a treat. Three marvelous romances in one film is an indulgence no fan should miss. Featuring some of the biggest stars of the 50s, The Story of Three Loves explores relationships -- from the whimsical to the dramatic -- recalled by passengers aboard a sleek ocean liner. In the first story, an impresario (James Mason) loses his heart to a lovely ballerina (Moira Shearer) with tragic results. Next, an elderly enchantress (Ethel Barrymore) uses magic to help a naive governess (Leslie Caron) find romance. Finally, a trapeze artist (Kirk Douglas) who was responsible for the death of his last partner trains a new one (Pier Angeli), a beautiful woman with a mysterious past. Three loves, three reasons to stay in tonight.

"The Story of Three Loves," is incredibly understated and mis-leading in its simple title. In 2 hours you will experience every nuance of romance played out brilliantly in three unique ways all inter-linked through a length of ribbon. In other words, each 'story' delivers in 40 minutes or so what today's touted romances take 2 hours of yawn. You will never care to see the romantic commercial fare of Streisand or Julia Roberts and the pale imitators today seen in explicit crassness. Why this is not shown as much as "An Affair To Remember," cannot be explained because it delivers three doses of romance more intensely with great eloquence, artistry and emotion from a charming Moira Shearer opposite James Mason in the first fantasy; in the second a young Leslie Caron plays opposite Farley Granger and a 14yr. old Ricky Nelson, maneuvered by Ethel Barrymore; in the third, Kirk Douglas charms the young, exquisite Pier Angeli back to life with a surprising climax. What makes all three unforgettably brilliant, is the masterly artistic control, including stunning color and camera angles and set design throughout that must have inspired even Rod Serling's imagination. Among the supporting cast were Agnes Moorehead and Richard Anderson. In the last story featuring Kirk Douglas and Pier Angeli, Kirk plays a fame-seeking trapeze artist resurrecting his career (and the conscience of an accidental death) with his new-found partner.(Angeli) who carries her own guilt. You follow them as they struggle to learn their high-wire act leading to a life-changing audition, captured with astounding camera angles and suspense. Two of the three stories were written by the prolific short-story writer, John Collier, with the sensitive Vincent Minnelli masterly directing. I think this film has no rival in delivering the many aspects to romance so imaginatively, so compellingly in three stories told in 2 hours.
